Final Presentation Reflection

The piece of vellum drafted with a floor plan, lay across my drafting board awaiting the first pencil stroke. The floor plan of the administrative office untouched awaited change. I began to envision the walls demolished leaving the space open. Ideas revolving around space triggered as I researched precedent images. Images of lofts found throughout New York City, inspired my design, as it was then I found my artist. Passionate for fashion as well as photography, the artist Eric Ray Davidson struck my attention. The flow of inspiration began as I further researched Davidson and began to design an inspired studio space for him.
Suddenly, it was the morning of final presentations. As tacks pinned the two final boards up, all the pieces came together. From the endless perspectives, introduction to sketch up, floor plans, section elevation plans, and many renditions of a cardboard model, my design was finalized and awaiting critique. As I expected, I was first to present. Nervous, not knowing what to expect, I began the description and reasoning behind my design for the studio space. The five-minute description of my design, felt as if an hour elapsed. Once finished, there was a slight pause as I prepared myself for both negative and positive feedback.
Reflecting on the feedback I received in relation to my design, I now see both the strengths and weaknesses found throughout my design. If able to modify my design for the studio space, I would consider the control of light throughout the space. Aware of the amount of natural light the windows give to the administrative office, I would design window coverings to minimize the amount of natural light. Aiding to my artist, Eric Ray Davidson, the window coverings would be made out of a material useful to him. Possibly a material accepting images to be projected on to its surface, or something simple to aid to his photography. However, I am satisfied with my design, as it is reflective of my personal style. Presented throughout my work, my style represents my designs as simplistic, organized, and clean.
Through out this past week, on average 40 designs for a possible studio space were presented. While emerged fully in each presentation, I have become aware that people have there own design suitable to them. As a group of boards were pinned up next to each other, there was a clear difference between the designers. Whether it was presented through the color palette, layout arrangement, or hand- rendered perspectives there was a clear difference between classmate’s styles. As my first year as an Interior Architecture student, I have learned numerous techniques and styles, which will aid to my future as a designer. Over the course of this year, I have developed a style personable to me. As I move forward as an interior designer, my designs will stay true to my style as they represent me in my future.

Studio Space: Presentation Board: A Blank Canvas

As the class was divided into two, half were assigned to the loading dock while the other half was assigned to the administrative office. At once, we grabbed as many tape measures as we could along with a pencil and our sketchbooks. Our first task was to receive the measures of the administrative office. Once we had exact measurements for the office, it was our job as individuals was to draw the floor plan and section elevations. As the plans developed, so did the concept for our final assignment. With the existing room, it was our job to choose an artist as inspiration. Whether the artist would be staying for a few days or few months, the space had to be accommodating. Inspired by photography, the New York and Los Angeles based photographer and director, Eric Ray Davidson, struck my eye. As I engaged myself in understanding his sense of style, I was able to receive ideas for the perfect studio space for him. The renovation began by deconstruction of the two interior walls of the office and a level change addition. Inspired by lofts located in New York City, I added a two step level change. The level change, accentuated with a partial frosted glass wall, was accommodating to the bedroom and bathroom area, as it added privacy while maintaining any open feel to the whole area. In my design for the studio space, I wanted to maintain an open feel allowing plenty of studio space for Davidson's work. By adding two partial walls, with a frosted glass pocket door, between the living area and kitchen area, it portrayed division while allowing it to still be accessible. Throughout the space, walls are limited providing plenty of natural light along with space. The studio space I design for Eric Ray Davidson, portrays simplicity and functionality, suitable to his personal style.

Clues Six & Seven: Redesign the car/ More Style

After deciding on which car to draw, the next task was to mold it into something of our imagination. Whether it be giving it arms, transforming it into an animal, or giving it a futuristic style. Already having some character with it's original design, I used my imagination to incorporate my own style in the car's design. While looking at the Volkswagen Beetle, I envisioned the 1970's. In my eyes, the headlights resembled John Lennon's glasses. Incorporating the styles of the 70's into the design of my car, I dressed the car as if it were a hippie. Accentuating the bright and bold colors found throughout the 70's along with flowers and peace signs.

Clue Five: Pick a car any car

For this clue, we were given the task to draw a car, truck, or bus of our choice in two point perspective. Immediately, I decided I wanted to draw an older car, something vintage. While envisioning which automobile would be best to draw, a 1955 Volkswagen Beetle caught my eye. I always see this car as having it's own personality. With the big bug eyed headlights and rounded structure, a Volkswagen Beetle has character.

Clue Four: Changing Colors

Replicating my design for a reading room three times, I created a simple color palette applying each in a different style. Using my "Drawing with Confidence" as inspiration, I was able to experience the different styles of marker rendering. With a color palette of only three colors, pale indigo, cool gray #1, and warm gray #2, I used each color in a different space with a different technique.

For clue three, we were given the task to design a reading room including the three patterns we chose. For my design, I was inspired to represent the patterns as wall coverings, furniture, and the space's architectural elements. The challenge was to keep the room balanced. I feel as if I successfully accomplished this task, by carrying the flow of similar shapes throughout the room.

For clue two, we were given the challenge to develop patterns based from an object of our choice. As I gave the space around me a quick glance, my eye was draw to the bright colors and designs of Leslie's bag. The designs were each unique, giving me opportunity to be creative with each detail. Out of the 25 detailed patterns, I chose the three above, mainly for their simplicity and bold contrast between black and white.

I frequently pass through this park each day on my way to the studio admiring the quiet beauty it holds. As the season changes from winter to spring, my daily walk is accompanied by the flourished trees and blossoming tulips. Throughout the park wooden benches are scattered, allowing a seat for a common traveler to rest, while admiring the simplistic beauty. The wooden bench sat alone on the top of the hill over looking the campus park. As I sat down, opened my sketch book, I looked up to realize in the distance the Gatewood Studio Building was emerging from behind the trees. This sketch is symbolic to me because as I sat amongst the flourished trees and tulips, I realized that the inspiration and ideas I receive in studio is floored by the nature around me.

A chai tea are the words that roll of my tongue as the man behind the counter asks me for my order. Each time I visit Starbucks, I continue to order the same drink. Although I am able to think outside of the box, I am just not ready yet to order outside the box. As I sat next to Leslie at the small square tables, her foot was placed upon the wooden chair. The black and white contrast of her converse's against the modern wood chair struck my eye. The chair's sleek back had a continuation of carved holes throughout it. The small circular holes within the chair, related to Leslie's shoe as the circular shape transitioned into aglets holding the shoelaces in place. This drawing is very simplistic, as it meant to reveal the relation of shapes.

Falling Water

As I sat beneath the trees circling the grounds of Falling Water, my eye was drawn in by the stone enclosing the fireplace. The stone stacked precisely one on top of another, did not distract from the beauty of the natural setting. Carried immensely throughout the house, similar stone work was used allowing the use of natural materials to portray a feeling of outdoors. The various uses of the stone attracted my eye as it was thoughtfully places within the living environment. In efforts to bring the outdoors in, a large boulder was not removed from the land but embraced. The boulder, both visible from the outside and inside, was used as structural support as well as a organic piece in the design. Surrounded by nature, falling water peaks out from behind the trees, blending smoothly with the land, as if it was meant to be there.

As the various versions of cardboard sketch models integrated to form a single idea for the final design, the size became monumental. Our design suddenly became more challenging as the scale of the domed archway stretched 30 feet across the pavement walkway into studio's entrance. The design changed drastically as construction began, however the structural base and oculus idea remained the same. The wood frame was covered by wallpapering allowing the interior space to feel darker. Within the space, the oculus is located directly above the viewer drawing the eye up and out into infinite space. The oculus reveals the feeling, when standing beneath it, you are the center. Throughout the day, shadows were casted on the interior walls through the oculus as the sun rotated.

The idea behind this project was to create a "gateway" relating to the architecture of the 16th Century. Individually within our group, we each found inspirational precedents furthering our design ideas. Relative to the 16th Century, my first idea was inspired by Villa la Rotunda of Italy. Throughout the 16th Century, a single oculus was used architecturally to control natural light as well as give a spiritual feel throughout the building. Inspired mainly by the oculus, the beginning ideas of my sketch models showcased the oculus as a focal point.

As each bottle was thoughtfully placed into the cardboard panels and the panels, self adhesive, into the window frame, our window display was complete. Within brushed silver frame of my window space countless flowers made from recycled water bottles flourish. As in no flower is the same, each flower was distinctly different from the one next to it. The goal for this project was to use natural daylight by enhancing it with out window display design. I believe I met this goal, as each flower reflected the daylight. The textures on the water bottles, allowed the natural light to create different effects from each angle of the sun's location. From either side of the sun would cast a shadow on to the desks below creating a blurry outline of the textured flowers. This assignment challenged us to show two forms of natural light, as the composition of my window display begins to blend into the window next to me the water bottles are manipulated to look like roses then fade into whole bottoms of a single water bottle. Natural light is displayed differently when seen through the countless flowers merging with the simplistic bottom of a water bottle. As my window display sits within the frame, it allows light to be displayed in a simplistic form, drawing in the viewers eye to the flower water bottles.

As we crowded closely around a single desk, the eight of us established our ideas. Each idea reflected a single persons personality. Countless ideas developed into a single idea as we found a common ground for the use of our materials. Cardboard and water bottles. This project was design to window space illuminating daylight through the materials used. Working as a team but contributing personal ideas to our selected windows, each person was allowed to show their envision for this assignment. Simply in my own style, I began to cut and curl edges of single water bottles. An ideation of a flower became my design for the window space, allowing light to flicker off the textured water bottles. Above is one of the first creations of the flowers.

The second assignment was to illustrate our first week back. Over a two page spread in our sketchbooks, we each personalized the pages with detailed images illustrating the events of our first week into the new semester. The inspiration for this layout, was chosen from the Marie Claire February 2010 Issue.

The pages are painted with black ink, creating images to portray the events of my first week. The pages speak to each other as the middle of the page illustrates my biggest adventure. The outline of the plane draws the eye to the center of the page. As your eye is drawn to the center, it is curious to find more. To follow the story line, the eye naturally reads left to right. My story begins with the simplistic outline of New Jersey. The images overlap one another portraying that of a pathway. My pathway continues with the images of a passport, wallet, plane, clock, the state of North Carolina, ending my story with an open vintage suitcase. The text layout is similar to that of the magazines. The bold words are lyrics from songs I related to my first week back. For my weeks to come, the pen line does not end, as each blank page of my sketchbook paints the mood and events of my day.

The first crisp white pages of a new sketchbook.

Our first assignment of the new semester was to create a two page spread of five objects. These five objects were to have personal meaning. As my pen began to paint black ink upon the first white pages, my personal objects came to life. Each object holds personal meaning as it was either given to me or is an everyday ritual object. The straight concrete lines of my drawing pen and envelope fade into the loose sketch marks of both the rose and two necklaces. Along with the presentation of five personal objects, the use of text and color are visible. Similar to the fading of stiff to loose pen sketches, color is apparent as it strikes the center of the page and fades out. The use of text allows each object to develop more of a personal touch, as I only know the significance of each phase. As the countless sketch marks forms a single drawing, each object comes to life.

Luminaire

Simplistic.

Strips of cream colored bond paper, glue, and textured white translucent paper. The few materials used to create my luminaire, makes it simply. However simplicity is not always simple.

Constructing each bow took both time and patience. The construction of the bows are formed by strips of bond paper, sized four or five different lengths, and made to form a ring. Layering four or five different size paper rings one inside of another, formed a bow when pinched together. The circular shape of my luminaire is based around the design of the bows fitting together. Creating a steady circular structure was hard to maintain with paper. The first design of my luminaire did not create the field of light I was imagining. Experimenting with different way to diffuse light, I discovered translucent paper. Lining sections inside my luminaire, the harsh lighting was diffused, creating a softer field of light. Along with creating a soft glow, the negative spaces between the bows in my luminaire created patterns when reflected on a surface.

Along with presenting regular orthographic drawings, we also need to have an expressive drawing portraying the field of light our luminaire gives off. The intensity of the different shapes found in my luminaire, was a challenge to draw. However to illustrate the form of my luminaire, I needed to concentrate on the angles and shapes presented. Portrayed in my expressive drawing, the field of light given off by the luminaire forms small patterns close to the table top. These small patterns are formed by the small openings between each bow. The luminaire also gives of a second field of light, which can be viewed as a glow or a soft burst of light coming from within the luminaire.

Thoughts

After the researching different forms of light. Natural light verse artificial light. Color verse black and white. The ideas of a luminaire still linger in my mind. Inspired by the designs of David Rockwell's and FLOS, I hope to recreate the same passion and attraction I felt when reviewing their designs. Simplicity describes my own personal taste in design. Simplicity isn't simple. In hopes to create a luminaire portraying a softness while remaining simplistic will be an obstacle. Inspired by the wide ranges of creativity I viewed throughout my research, many ideas come to mind. Creating a single idea will entail finding a mutual balance in each of my ideas. Imagine.

Beyond the intensity of color and softness of black and white, I uncovered the simplistic ways lighting is portrayed. Exploring different forms of light, I was attracted to the various colors, shapes, and designs. Behind each design, is a hidden form of electricity. The smallest form of electricity can illuminate a large space. Enhancing interior and exterior spaces, lighting can set the mood whether it be calming or passionate. Whether it be a work of art, interior space, or exterior space lighting creates an attraction.

Process

The moment new projects are assigned, a rush of ideas fill your head. The word unity describes a relationship. In this project, using only 12 skewers and 12 4''x6'' bristol board, the goal was to find a bond between each material creating unity. The cluster of my ideas formed both bridges and barriers effecting my design positively or negatively. My first thought was based on the idea of stairs. The idea of stairs inspired certain shapes. I focused on a triangular shape. Using the 12 planes of bristol board, I experimented with an assortment of folding techniques. Folding the planes of bristol board into 5 parts, developed a 3 dimensional triangular shape. When layered one on top of the other, the triangular shapes formed a design similar to roman curtains. The design concept developed once the 12 skewer's were added. In the first rendition of my design, the skewer's were placed horizontally through the negative space of the triangles. By slightly bending each of the skewers, the structure developed a sense of movement. In the final rendition, 11 skewers were slightly bent, leaving one skewer straight, defining the center of the structure. From all angles, the design of this structure creates movement while remaining simple.

Simplicity.

The cube is constructed out of bristol board. The measurements are 4x4x4 with 1/2 inch tabs joining together at two of the corners. The cube is held together naturally without glue. The clear straws portray the idea of a floating cube. The straw rest simply in a cardboard base. Defining the cubes simplicity.

The Foust Building is one of the university's oldest buildings. The structure and presentation of the building is very historic. The main features of the building are presented in the front. As I approched the Foust Building, I had to consider the angle I wanted to draw at. The building is so large in size that it was difficult to draw all of it. I focused mainly on the front of the build because the structure is so intericate and beautiful. The arches, rustic brick, and roof tops draw attention to any passing visitor.

Design a container for a special object using paper, fabric, and thread of your choice.

It is something I wear close to my heart everyday. It brings me a feeling of comfort. The engagement ring given to my mother from my father, was my special object. The idea of the project was to design a container. Being that my special object is both small and delicate, I wanted to relate the design of the container to compliment the ring's features. The idea of origami came to mind as I began to sketch out my ideas. Origami paper is dainty, similar to the diamond ring, linking them both together. As I researched various origami boxes, I saw the simple box. The simplicity in the box would highlight the beautiful vintage diamond ring. The container was meant to display the ring, attract the viewers to it's natural beauty. The colors black and red, were chosen to accentuate the simple diamond joined by a gold band. As the assignment progressed, so did my skill level in origami. My second design for the container was based off of a triangular origami box. I discovered that combining four triangles, instead of three, the shaped formed a diamond. The diamond shape easily related to the diamond in the in ring. The color scheme also changed. From a simple black box, to a golden diamond box. The gold origami added interest to the gold band of the ring. The fabric of a simple red bandana, remained the same, cradling the engagement ring. Although both the shape and colors changed, the design of delicateness remained untouched.

Objective

Find two natural artifacts and join them together using a linear material as a binding agent.

As I walked the pathway back to my dormitory, I envisioned all the possible ideas each time I came across a tree, a pebble, or a flower. Surrounded by nature, a small piece of bark caught my eye. The jagged and harsh texture of the bark was different from the smooth texture of the leaves surrounding it. The contrast between both textures, rough and smooth, expanded my imagination to an idea. With the idea of contrasting textures, a delicate purple flower was the perfect fit. However, the obstacle was configuring how I would bond each natural artifact together only using a linear material. At first I used a thick ivory rope to bond each piece together. Both the thickness and color of the rope took away from the beauty of the bark and flower. Brown thread was my final decision for the bonding agent. The brown thread blended into the natural colors found in the bark. Aside from the bonding agent, the ridges found in the bark aided to the setting of the flower. The thin stem fit perfectly into the ridges of the bark. Along with both the bark and the flower fitting together to perfectly, the colors in each artifact blended together. The final product came out better than I first envisioned to be. Each natural artifact fit together as if it was a puzzle, and the bonding agent did not distract from the natural beauty of the piece.

Throughout the day, I have been visiting several sketchblogs, many which have caught my eye. The creativity of every sketchblog represents each artist's personality. Simplicity and chaotic are two words that described many of the blogs I viewed today. Blogs were set up as simple as just a few words and their illustrations, while other blogs seemed crowded with illustrations. As I viewed many blogs, one caught my eye. The simplicity of the artist's page jumped right out at me. Black and white were the only colors displaying the illustrations. As i continued to view the page, I noticed the different language of the artist. Always interested in traveling to a different country, the blog of "yakubiuk" was such an inspiration. Although the words were in a different language, the art work was demonstrated so beautifully that I hardly focused on the words. The page was set up so beautifully that as I viewed each illustration I felt at ease. There was no busyness that drew away from the artwork. As a thick black ink pen boarded the page, i saw a contrast that was not demonstrated on any of the other blogs. The contrast between the pen and the illustrations allowed the viewer to focus mainly on the artwork. This blog not only represented the artist's personality, but also represented my own personality. Inspired by the blog of "yakubiuk", I hope to demonstrate my artwork with the same simplicity. By achieving simplicity, the viewers of my blog can focus mainly on my illustration and skills.
