Gateways

As the various versions of cardboard sketch models integrated to form a single idea for the final design, the size became monumental. Our design suddenly became more challenging as the scale of the domed archway stretched 30 feet across the pavement walkway into studio's entrance. The design changed drastically as construction began, however the structural base and oculus idea remained the same. The wood frame was covered by wallpapering allowing the interior space to feel darker. Within the space, the oculus is located directly above the viewer drawing the eye up and out into infinite space. The oculus reveals the feeling, when standing beneath it, you are the center. Throughout the day, shadows were casted on the interior walls through the oculus as the sun rotated.

Gateways: Process

The idea behind this project was to create a "gateway" relating to the architecture of the 16th Century. Individually within our group, we each found inspirational precedents furthering our design ideas. Relative to the 16th Century, my first idea was inspired by Villa la Rotunda of Italy. Throughout the 16th Century, a single oculus was used architecturally to control natural light as well as give a spiritual feel throughout the building. Inspired mainly by the oculus, the beginning ideas of my sketch models showcased the oculus as a focal point.
